Installing a New Sewer Drain
When undertaking below-ground property sewer works—whether extending an existing pipe or installing a new sewer line—you are required to complete and lodge an online Plumbing Application Form, along with a plan drawing of the proposed sewer works. If applicable, plans of the proposed building to which the services are being connected must also be included. This application can be submitted by your licensed plumber or the person managing the works, but you must provide the details of the licensed plumber responsible for the installation.
The application form is available from your relevant water authority, such as South East Water , City West Water , or Yarra Valley Water , depending on your location. Allow a minimum of three weeks for the application to be assessed, and check for any applicable fees, which typically include the cost of a sewer inspection (explained below).
Once the application is approved, the water authority will issue a Consent Number, also known as a PIC Number. After receiving this number, the plumber may proceed with the sewer installation and prepare it for mandatory inspection. Once the inspection is passed, you may backfill and complete the works.
